Stephen Cimini
He has been developing a vocabulary for his current work since 1996, which originates from the linear landscape of New York City. It has since mutated to geometric spaces and their relationships to each other while still adhering to its architectural origins. Ciminis color palette is always in flux. He is always searching for new color relationships and is amazed by the personalities colors take on when placed next to each other. Colors can swear at each other, make love to each other, embarrass each other and unfortunately, even ignore each other. Color can reveal a new side of itself long after a painting has been finished and has found a home.
November 2003, Stephen Cimini was selected by a committee of distinguished art professionals to receive a grant from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation, started by Jackson Pollock’s wife, Lee Krasner in 1985 for artists with established abilities.
Cimini uses marble dust and wax medium to invent different surfaces. The marble dust gives paint a chalky look while the wax medium enhances the paint with a soft patina and transparency.
