Mike Hovey

Hovey’s strong artistic inclination became evident in his formative years, which were spent in Minnesota and New Jersey. There he gained recognition for his fine artworks, primarily in painting and sculpting. He began exhibiting in galleries in Minneapolis and St. Paul Minnesota. It was at this time that he developed his interest in designing and building furniture, primarily with more traditional materials. Meanwhile he received his undergraduate degree from Minnesota State University, and later attending Drake University, Des Moines, IA where he completed Performing Arts and Art graduate work. Mr. Hovey continued to study art at the University of Minnesota. He received his J.D. degree from Hamline University in St. Paul, MN in 1982 and received additional artistic training at the Minneapolis Institute of Art, The College of Art and Design in Minneapolis.

In 1985 Hovey relocated to Phoenix Arizona where he established a studio downtown and worked, studied and exhibited with Mr. David DeVoss. He was later invited to join an artists cooperative in Phoenix, where throughout the 1990’s he produced two and three-dimensional works. It was during this time that Mike developed his interest in, and ultimately taught himself to, design and build innovative furniture with plastics.

During the 1980’s and 90’s Mike continued in his artistic training at the

University of Arizona and Scottsdale Artists School. Hovey has been studying plastics, polyester and foam applications in art with Mr. Marvin Wallace.

Hovey’s works appear in numerous public and private collections. And he has had numerous showings of his furniture pieces. He continues to push the boundaries of graceful, intriguing yet comfortable furniture. Each piece is unique and hand made.
