Justin Masters

Justin Masters is a powerful colorist whose paintings reflect a wide range of emotions.  In his recent works, he bares the struggles of an abstract artist existing in a state of mind of unrest.  Using thick, rough, almost angry swaths of color, Masters shows a willingness to be more expressive and reveals many of the darker aspects of his unconscious.  With that, he very effectively pulls us into his world of personal symbols and communicates the works shifting moods.

“Being a self-taught artist, I am searching to uncover thoughts, emotions and truths through my work.  On the surface, my paintings are impulsive.  There is a sense of irony in finding a balance between movement and areas of rest.”

Masters’ art-making process consists of layering random colors that are sometimes completely obscured.  He slowly builds the surface of the paintings by spreading the oils thickly, which create the surface tension essential to his abstract work.
